About Alston
Our Pennine Ways Head Office is situated within
the North Pennine market town of Alston - at 1,100 feet, the highest
market town in England.
With its cobbled main street, historic buildings
and traditional market cross, the town has been a popular film set
in the production of a number of period dramas and movies.
At the same time, this is a thriving community,
with excellent primary and secondary schools, a library, and a number
of clubs and activities. Of course, Alston also has many shops and
galleries, including a supermarket, cafes and take-aways, and many
traditional pubs.
The ground-breaking Cybermoor project in the town
has introduced computers to nearly every household, and this was
one of the first rural communities to introduce wireless broadband
Internet access, meaning that living and working in the countryside
is now possible for many. BT broadband (ADSL) is also available in
areas where the wireless network is not feasible.
Yet Alston is only one hour from the cities of Carlisle
and Newcastle, and only half an hour from both Penrith and Hexham.
It is also conveniently located near to a variety
of places of interest, such as Hadrian's
Wall, and is a half hour's
drive from the Lake
District.
The North Pennines is one of the largest and most
recent parts of England to be officially declared an "Area of
Outstanding Natural Beauty". It spans three counties: Northumberland
(to the south of Hexham), Durham and Cumbria and comprises magnificent
moorlands, wooded valleys and small, unspoilt villages. |
